Boring old headshot… really??

I recently saw a statement on social media that made me read further… it read ‘don’t want a boring old headshot?’ It occurred to me that I’ve never seen a ‘boring old headshot’ – a poor one perhaps, but not boring. It might be poor in its technical production, for example, poorly lit and too dark, too much contrast, out of focus, an old holiday snap, wrong angle… and then there’s the expression… stiff, nervous, apprehensive, serious and decidedly questionable. So if the offering to pep up a ‘boring old headshot’ is to put someone on a brightly coloured background,  what about that expression??

90% of the success of a good headshot is in the expression. Many people who dislike their photograph being taken, will also say they would like to be captured as ‘friendly and approachable’. Yes you can have a fantastic fine art portrait of someone with a non-smiling expression. It could be wistful, contemplative, cheeky, thoughtful… but for business engagement that’s probably not the best style to go for. There is a friendly and approachable expression in all of us… after all it’s part of our personality.

Our image says a great deal about us and if you form opinions of others by their online image before you get to meet them, you can be sure others will be doing the same about you.

So if you want to encourage trust and engagement with others in your business world, friendly and approachable is the best way forward. Not fixed and posed, but natural and spontaneous… and definitely not boring, whatever background is decided upon.

Video… hang on, I’ve never talked about video before??

Are you one of those people who find yourself saying “I really should get started with video marketing”? What holds you back? Is it technical know-how, or perhaps not knowing what to say, or just complete fear of putting yourself in front of the camera?

Perhaps you are like many others and are now watching several self made videos online. You probably watch some all the way through and are happy with what you’ve seen and learned, or just been thoroughly entertained… it did what it said on the tin! But how many do you tire of all too soon and switch off? It’s pretty important to understand ‘why’ you like some and not others, if you are going to start creating your own.

Creating your own video doesn’t replace working with a professional videographer, but getting to grips with it, can set you up to confidently engage with and grow your audience, because today it’s all about building that trust and engagement. Photographs and videos can be the first thing people ever see of you.

Let me ask you this – if you were to employ yourself to represent your business or company in photographs, presentations and videos … do you think you’d get the job?

Hang on… I’m a photographer, I’ve not talked about video before, so what’s going on? Firstly, I’m not about to venture into this skill set. Having always concentrated on helping people be more confident in front of the camera for photographs, it’s been a natural progression to also build people’s skills and confidence in front of the camera for video.

You have the perfect resource to use… that’s yourself, because you and what you do, are who your audience are interested in. Learning to develop these skills is within your reach.

On the 23rd May, I will be running a half day Video Presentation Skills workshop just outside Bury St Edmunds, in collaboration with MarleyBird Communications, focusing on the importance of ‘what you should say’ and ‘how you should say it‘ to create great marketing content without costing you much more than your time.

You can Love Your Image…

Sometimes blogs can be a bit like waiting for a bus… however…!

In January of this year I gave a talk on a very common subject, but very little discussed – those who dislike being photographed and think they’re not very photogenic.

If you think it’s all down to you and there’s nothing that can be done… think again and read on. The cause can be very different from person to person, but the result is very similar.

Hear me out… it’s not all down to you and there is something you can do about it.

Imagine being completely comfortable in front of the camera and not let it become a repeated challenge to your self esteem.

I’ve launched a specially designed experience to help you explore this further and discover a fresh new outlook and confidence.

Awesome Autumn 2014 promotions…

Well it’s been a long and busy summer, with shoots as varied as I can remember!

I have a bag full of blogs waiting to share with you, but in the meantime have launched a couple of Autumn promotions.

The first is so important to those of us in business and was recently reminded by a clients quote… a strong indication that good profile photographs can draw people to you.

“I get a lot of compliments on the photo’s that you did! I ask all my clients where they found me and a good majority of them reply from my website.  They chose me because they like my photo and I look approachable! ” 🙂

I will be arranging the first session dates in the next week if you would like to take advantage of this promotion.

The second is making the most of our lovely autumn colours that have started to appear and a great opportunity to enjoy some valuable downtime to yourself or with your family.

I won’t mention the ‘C’ word yet, but a promotion worth considering if you would like gift ideas!

These shoots will be arranged and held at a beautiful outdoor Suffolk location – flexibility with our lovely British weather will be allowed for!

You CAN… Love Your Image…

How many of you think you’re not photogenic or dislike being photographed?

Having heard this many times from people, over the past few years, I’ve put this question to several individuals and groups of ladies and amazed, not because people responded, but how many did so…

Let me help you feel differently.

Would you join me and enjoy a complimentary tea or coffee, as I give an informative talk on this subject and open up the possibility for change, that you CAN love your image.

FEAR NOT, no photography will be taking place at this talk… however there will be workshops set up at The Self Centre, for those who wish to explore further – more about these soon.

I really want to share this information so IT’S FREE TO ATTEND:

Photography Art Exhibitions… two of them!

Last month I wrote about a photography art exhibition coming up at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds. With great anticipation, this has just opened, with the official opening/viewing Friday 3rd May for ‘All The Worlds a Stage’. This venue is perfectly placed in the middle of Bury, the gallery being upstairs overlooking The Arc shopping area.

So much has happened since then, including a second exhibition that opened on the 19th April and continues until the 12th May, at The Gallery Highwaymans, just outside Risby, near Bury St Edmunds.

The whole proces from being invited to exhibit, through to deciding which pieces to put forward, how they will be printed, framed and displayed; costing; arranging and ordering to arrive on time. Once received, two weekends spent carefully sourcing and fixing ‘D’ rings and hanging wires, plus labelling and finally lovingly wrapping and placing them into safe carrying containers, to transport to the exhibition venues.

So a fortnight ago, we went to a well attended opening evening for ‘Through The Lens’, at The Gallery Highwaymans… I say ‘we’, my friend and colleague Paul Cooklin is also exhibiting several of his beautiful pieces from Cuba. I would thoroughly recommend visiting, not only to see a great selection of photography, but the venue is a truly beautiful place in itself.

Five different pieces have been placed in each exhibition, both on the subject of shadows, both quite unique in their discovery and creation. All these pieces can be seen on my website via the following links and are available to buy as limited editions:

Through The Lens

I think one of my favourites from the work has to be this one… ‘Face The Demon’

The stories behind both sets of work are different and can be read by visiting the folders of work on my website… better still, visit the exhibitions if you get the opportunity :).

Photography Art Exhibition… from 1st May

Well this is a first, some of my work will be displayed at The Apex, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, from the beginning of May, in a photography art exhibition called ‘All The Worlds a Stage’ – running for the whole month.

On the strength of a particular project on ‘Shadows’, that I add too from time to time, was invited to take part.

While there is not a great deal of publicity currently out there, apart from a brief mention on The Apex website and the exhibition company’s site, all those taking part will have gone through their submission process. This has meant, choosing which pieces to display, in what medium, framing and at what size… add to this writing a statement about the work and naming the display pieces. Might sound easy, but has been quite an extrodinary process.

The inspiration behind the work was always there… how it came about is one of those endless sources of excitement, when you discover what’s been created and what it reveals. There is already a second phase to the work that has been created, although won’t be displayed yet.

Two colleagues of mine, Paul Cooklin and Steve Stoddart, will also have work on show and am quite excited to see which of their pieces are being entered.

More will be posted more nearer May…
