A – Z Photography tips and information… B

(B) is for black and white – sometimes the success of a shot is in its simplicity and removing the colour can aid this and change the focus. Plus, mixed with the right lighting (covered under ‘L’) it can bring a great ‘mood’ quality to the image, shown below in a small selection of very different examples.

Black and white photographs

(B) is also for… background – not so obvious, to the point it’s easy to forget them altogether – especially when you are concentrating on your foreground image! Then you end up with objects suddenly appearing in your finished composition that you hadn’t seen at the time of capture! A telegraph pole sticking out the top of someone’s head is never a good look!

So look out for them! A shifting of the camera or your position (often quite small) can save the whole composition of your image. The photo below of the young lady sitting on the beach is a simple example, positioning her in between two upright posts in the background that have strong shadows. If you have a tricky background, observe if it’s possible to use it to your advantage, i.e. frame your image with the background… or move altogether and get another angle.

There are other factors to consider with backgrounds covered further on in the series, so watch out for those 🙂

Photography development day….

About a month ago, myself and Steve Stoddart from Wandering River, shared a collaborative day of photography.

There were various projects we both wanted to do development work on, so pooling our equipment, we had a thoroughly enjoyable day working together.

With kit out everywhere, you’d think we were giving Warehouse Express a run for there money! However, being reasonably strict with our time schedule, can happily say, much was achieved.

Will post the various results as they get edited – and the first was from part of the day with our two lovely teenage models, Alice and Catherine. We started by asking them for different emotions – now without saying any more or how the girls know each other, would be interested to hear people’s opinion about what they see from the images and what emotions they express, if anyone would like to comment.

Would also add, we did take several shots of the girls together and individually with much happier expressions, that they loved!

Diss Express Beautiful Baby Competition…

So at the end of last year, I was one of the sponsors of the annual Diss Express Beautiful Baby Competition.

One of the winners recently had their photo shoot prize, well…. baby Amber brought her parents, Marie and David along with her for a studio based session and mum and dad were particularly delighted with the results.

Little Amber seemed to enjoy it too….

When people enjoy their shoot, it makes my job a lot easier, as the happiness is evident in the photographs and helps for a lot longer attention span from little ones… plus when you receive very positive feedback, makes my job so rewarding!

Advent blog… December 16th

In contrast to the very damp (festive?) weather we currently have, thought I’d share some early morning shots (and a big splash of colour!) I took earlier in the year of poppies, at their best in my garden. Was playing with a very shallow depth of field and really like the little droplets of water in focus on the petals.

Spot the bee in each image, hovering close by.

Advent Blog… December 15th

This time of year there are lots of pantomimes on at the moment and while I don’t have any images of panto, found some photographs I took of a local childrens theatre group performing ‘Oliver Twist’.

These kids were just brilliant and it was a pleasure to be involved with the production.

Can anyone who can list the characters they are playing?

Advent Blog… December 12th

Todays images are remembering two very special people.

Just like butterflies, they were beautiful and much loved by all who knew them.

Butterflies always visit the Buddleia flowers when in bloom in my garden. They move so quickly, you have to be very patient to capture them, but it’s fun and rewarding when you get a really good image… so I’ll keep trying!

Advent Blog… December 10th

While walking through the Abbey Gardens in Bury in Autumn, this little squirrel  hops towards me, stopped, posed… then threw a look that said ‘well hurry up, I haven’t got all day’… so I shot him… with my camera!

We sometimes get horses tethered out on the common – so early one frosty morning, I liked the light behind these two beautiful ponies and ended up with a bit of accidental lens flare, that for me added to the mood of the photo.
