How much priority should we give ‘down time’?

Easter is around the corner bringing with it a term holiday for those with children in school. Now what to do with the them? Is it a holiday for those in charge? ’I’ll do that, if I have the time’, or, ‘we’ll do it later’. Do we find the time, or are we chasing our tails and it feels like another working week? Remembering the simpler times when we could work out where our friends were by who’s house they’d left their bikes outside and being told as kids to be home by tea time!

No mobiles or internet, just our bikes and imagination.

Not pining for rose tinted nostalgia, too many reminders of dodgy clothing choices and shocking/questionable haircuts, but how much downtime do you book for yourself and your loved ones? The benefits of ‘head space’, enjoying the great outdoors and doing the things that bring enhancement to your life… why on earth don’t we give it a higher priority?

Future memories are being made today.

Outside is free. These things don’t have to be financially restrictive. Build a blanket den, hide & seek or get crafty – make stuff from, well, stuff! But are teenagers going to want to be involved with a ladybird search? Our past experience has included tame pheasants, quad bikes, dogs, sport, music, oh and imitating Mo Farrah and Usain Bolt, to name a few things we’ve captured with the teens of the family.

Picnic in the park, beach walks and nature trails, liking these simple things for what they are, not for the ‘likes’ it may achieve on social media is still pretty priceless.

Suffolk Hunt Pony Club – Peter Pan Hunter Trial and Showjumping…

Did I mention a busy summer so far…? Wanted to share with you the fun of covering this event for the Suffolk Hunt Pony Club on the 23rd June – now my pony club days are a few decades ago… and was with the Thetford Chase branch, BUT, I still have my rosettes, which are truly treasured.

This branch of the pony club have their base in the grounds of the beautiful Ickworth Park. Having visited the venue and course previously had some idea of where the best shots would be, but as the sun gradually moves round during the day, so the best positions change. Plus I wanted to catch a good variety of fences, rather than sticking with the same ones for most classes.

Light, angle and a good mix of experience all help capture great action photographs, so have shared quite a selection with you and hope they bring that sense of excitement, challenge and fun that you can have if horses are your love.

We had an Olympian in our midst! Caroline Powell took a couple of her horses round the bigger classes.

Have included a link for anyone wishing to know more about the pony club.

The unexpected thing from the many photographs that went online from this event was the amount of traffic I subsequently got to my website. Ok, there were quite a few competitors, but across 5 days, had around 6,000 unique visits!

A big congratulations to Terry, who bravely covered as much of the show jumping as possible, while I was out on the cross country course. Thrown in at the deep end, he did really well.

‘It’s a long way down…’

The Hamlet Centre 2012 Spring Fair

Would like to let everyone know about The Hamlet Centre’s 2012 Spring Fair, being held on 28th April in Norwich. This wonderful organisation supports children and adults with disablities and regularly have fund raising events.

Please support, share and/or spread the word if you can, especially as their event banner was recently stolen from the Chapelfield roundabout in Norwich, so need all the help they can get with promotion.

I will be there displaying some of my portfolio of images, so please stop by and say hi if you come.

Thank you.

Wedding Photography – Another Option …

At the beginning of this year, after a short presentation I had given at a business lunch in Bury St Edmunds, Victoria introduced herself and asked if I could help on a special photo shoot. She and her fiancé Rob were getting married in March this year in Scotland. However, it wasn’t to photograph their wedding day, as they had decided not to hire the services of a photographer for the event. Instead, a fortnight later, they were having a party close to their new home in Suffolk, to celebrate their marriage with family and friends. Many had been unable to travel to the highlands for the big day. Planning to once again dress in their wedding finery, she asked if I could help. After a short discussion, we agreed I would go over just before midday and spend an hour photographing the couple at their house.

It couldn’t have worked out better, having allowed enough time, so they could relax and enjoy some special time together. Their home and garden is where they are very happy and provided some good areas for photographs. Surrounded by everything familiar and not torn between, spending time with their guests and a photographer wanting to drag them away at every moment. I recall hearing a neighbour’s music playing that helped the fun we had in that hour. ‘Olivia’ the cat afforded us a little of her time also…

Victoria and Rob’s happiness together is very clear to see and the photographs from that shoot are as special as the day they got hitched.
